The Importance of Menstrual Hygiene
Menstrual hygiene is a critical aspect of women’s health. However, many young girls and women, especially in public secondary schools, lack access to sanitary products. This issue has far-reaching consequences:

  • Health Impacts: Poor menstrual hygiene can lead to infections and other health complications.
  • Educational Barriers: Girls often miss school during their periods, affecting their academic performance and increasing dropout rates.
  • UNICEF Findings: 1 in 10 school-age African girls skip school during menstruation or drop out entirely due to the lack of menstrual products.

The Problem in Kaduna, Nigeria

In Kaduna, Nigeria, this issue is particularly prevalent. The lack of access to menstrual products and inadequate facilities in schools disproportionately affects female students, hindering their education and well-being.

Our Campaign: The Pad Right Initiative
Through the Pad Right Initiative, we aim to address this challenge by:

  • Advocating for Policy Changes: Urging the Kaduna State Ministry of Health and Education Authorities to provide free menstrual products in public secondary schools.
  • Promoting Education: Integrating comprehensive menstrual hygiene education into the school curriculum to reduce stigma and misinformation.
  • Improving Facilities: Ensuring access to clean water and safe, private toilet facilities in schools for dignified menstrual management.

Why This Matters

Improved access to menstrual products and education will:
– Increase girls’ school attendance and reduce dropout rates.
– Improve menstrual hygiene practices and reduce health risks.
– Combat taboos and myths surrounding menstruation.
– Align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 3, 4 & 6).
